I began to do heritage research seriously after a client from California hired me to research the story of her grandmother and shared some fantastic photographs with me. I became fascinated by the stories that historic photographs hold and was determined to document as many stories as possible. I wrote a column entitled “The Heritage Detective” in two different publications until they folded, and I have written for newsletters and other magazines over the years.

I realized that most of these articles had been published in short-run publications and had never been available to the general population. For that reason, I have decided to publish the stories, some of which had strict word counts, updating the information as necessary and including more photographs if they are available.

Learn about heritage buildings in Greater Victoria—and beyond— and the interesting people who lived in them. Volume One was published in February 2023, and Volume Two was released in July 2023. Books are available in Victoria from Munro’s BooksBolen BooksRussell BooksIvy’s Bookshop, Tanner’s Books, and the Craigdarroch Castle Gift Shop. If you don’t see it on the shelf, ask for it.  The book is also available online through Amazon.

The Heritage Detective, Volume One, is a must-read for anyone interested in the history and culture of Victoria, BC. It tells the stories behind the heritage buildings and the people who lived and worked in them, providing a unique window into the past. The stories are full of fascinating details and vivid descriptions that will transport you to the past and give you a sense of the area’s history. The Heritage Detective brings to life the stories of the families, businesses, and organizations that have shaped Victoria’s history. Through it, readers gain an insight into the evolution of the city as well as the people and places that made it what it is today. Loosely based on articles written over several decades with additional research to bring the stories up to date and rich with photographs, the book tells the tales of ordinary people who lived extraordinary lives. Because, of course, it wasn’t just the mansions that everybody writes about that had exciting histories. Learn about the electrocution on Fort Street, a pioneer who owned Wallace Island and the story of his nephew who lived in James Bay, the survival of tiny houses from around the turn of the twentieth century on upper Fort Street, and early real estate speculation in Fairfield. For residents of Victoria, The Heritage Detective is an invaluable resource that provides a deeper understanding of the city and its history. For those outside the area, it is an engaging and educational read that offers an in-depth look at the history and culture of the city. So whether you are a resident or a visitor, this book will entertain and educate you.
