I have been actively searching for my family roots for over 30 years. I have been working with cousins to discover our common ancestors and find it amazing to locate long-forgotten relatives.
With the use of DNA, the search becomes a little easier, but it is still hard work. What many people do not understand is that not all information is online. Many family historians do not check sources but blindly add names to a family tree in a strange sort of contest to see who can have the largest tree.
I have been fairly successful in tracing some of my lines back to the 19th century but hit a brick wall with my great-great-grandparents who came from Ireland sometime before 1833 as that is the date when they married in New Brunswick. I was thrilled in 2018 to be able to visit the grave of Sarah Russell Kelley, my great-great-grandmother, in a small church cemetery in Chipman, New Brunswick. Just to walk around the area where my family once lived was mind-boggling.
