Grandmother. Writer. Philanthropist
My name is Helen Edwards.
I was born in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia and have lived there all my life. I have four children and five surviving grandchildren.
My Heritage Work
I have always been interested in history, possibly because my parents always visited museums and galleries when I was young. When my husband and I purchased an old house in 1970, I began researching and was hooked. I have been involved with the heritage movement since 1976 I joined the Hallmark Society. I worked as a volunteer for several years, then was hired as a part-time Administrative Director. I am now retired from the paid job but am still volunteering. I am proud of the work I have done with this organization and was pleased when the name was changed to Hallmark Heritage Society, a name that better reflects the group’s work.
In 1995, I returned to the University of Victoria to continue my studies, which I had begun over 30 years before. I shifted my focus to Art History and Cultural Resource Management to reflect my interests better. In 2001, I graduated with a BA (with distinction) and began to work as a heritage professional. I also worked as a genealogist, helping clients find their ancestors and family history.
In 2020, I began a new career as a full-time author. I wrote two books about my father-in-law’s naval career, a two-book series entitled The Heritage Detective, a comprehensive history of professional hockey in Victoria, and the story of the first decade of the Victoria HarbourCats baseball team. For more information, see my books page.
I no longer work actively as a heritage professional, preferring to devote my time to writing.
